With a lurch of the rented carriage, Eleonore-Magdalena of Neuburg finally arrived at Hofburg Imperial Palace to meet her betrothed. She forced a calming breath, telling herself that the Holy Roman Emperor was only human.
It was a short trip from her home and she was thankful she made it, especially since she was twenty one and just now getting married. Twenty one was late for any lady to marry, even if that lady was to marry the Holy Roman Emperor.
Opening the curtain to the window, she peered out at her new home. Again, she told

“Damn the French,” Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor swore angrily as he kicked his easel. The paintbrush in Leopold’s hand was on the verge of snapping as his hand squeezed in anger.
One of Leopold’s advisors, Tobias, said, “Your Holiness, the war is going well.”
”I do not refer to the war Tobias. I refer to the sudden death of my wife and daughters.”
Tobias chimed hesitantly, “If I may say so, your majesty, the French are not to blame for the death of your wife and daughters.”
